The Jesus Storybook BibleThe Jesus Storybook Bible — Sally Lloyd-Jones (2007)
A new way to introduce children to the stories of the bible, The Jesus Storybook is beautifully illustrated and enchantingly interpreted. A trip through the storybook illuminates God’s work in scripture, while also highlighting the place of Jesus in scripture, and our place within that story. The storybook is appropriate for children ages 4 and up.

CommonPrayer-e1290180114254Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals (2010)
“If you love liturgy, this book is for you.
If you don’t know what liturgy is, this book is also for you.”
The introduction of Common Prayer immediately makes room for anyone to approach this resource. Full to the brim with prayers and outlines for services, this invaluable book takes up the spirit of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, and gives it a twist that makes it both broadly accessible and focused in its concern for spiritual intervention in everyday struggles. “Liturgy is soul food.”

The Very Good GospelThe Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right — Lisa Sharon Harper (2016)
Lisa Sharon Harper has written a book about us. Writing from her experience as black woman she shares how her struggle to be accepted opened her ears to the very good gospel, that we are all meant to belong in shalom with God and one another. “The community of creation was given by God. And, ultimately, the extravagant gift of bonded human companionship was the gift of God. What human fulfillment can there be apart from God?”

2017

Two new nonfiction adult books are ready for checkout. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly uncovers the contributions of black women in the aviation and space programs of our country. If you have seen the movie, I would encourage you to read the book as well. The movie draws on the many myths surrounding the main characters while the books tells the more accurate story but is just as fascinating.

Hillbilly Elegy by J.D.Vance gives a good assessment of the working poor whites in this country while engaging us in the story of Vance’s life in Kentucky and Ohio. Caution: the language is coarse.

I want to thank all of you who participated in the Children’s Literacy book campaign for our library, especially Kevin Kabacinski who gave a generous donation in honor of his father. Eighteen books were purchased for our young people. They are ready to be checked out!

Periodicals
Our library subscribes to magazines that you can either read in the library or just take home and bring back when you have finished.

The Presbyterian Outlook is published weekly, with articles on a wide range of topics and a Bible study. Presbyterians Today is available six times a year and is filled with stories about Presbyterians like you and me and churches like ours. It also includes meditations for Lent and Advent.

Horizons is an official publication of Presbyterian Women, is issued six times a year, and is good reading for all. The emphasis is on mission, peace and justice and Bible study.

GuidePosts is a monthly publication with meditations for each day.

The latest issues are on the sofa table in the library.
